Lily Castano
Lily Castaño an artist that identifies as Latina, who was born in Colombia in 1976 but adopted and brought to the UK in 1977.
Through her Art, Lily has established a deeper connection to her Latina roots. Alongside her daughters Maisy and Esme, she has begun to discover herself, her girls, Latin American culture and a greater understanding of women’s experiences whatever and wherever they place themselves in the world.
“Art has become my shadow, my space in-between and my salvation in times of crisis”.
Lily’s works are in response to fragmented childhood memories, stories and transcultural heritage which woven together create a series of damaged narratives represented by a select palette.
In an attempt to salvage the past, recollections are played out through the use of motifs such as the hunter and hunted in particular the Wolf..
Poised in the sombreness of the wood, wolf wonders at her. “What do you see in the darkness that makes you silently tremble little red?”
Lily has also set up Latina Caravana Partnership which brings together her art, Red Thread Collective and Sister Latina Caravana.
The aim of the Latina Caravana Partnership is to share, share, share…and to promote, empower and support women to unite across boundaries by a single Red Thread- - - - - -
Lily wanted to start up a Red Thread Collective for women in the local community in and around A66 in Penrith to come together for support, friendship, inspiration and events.
Women from all walks of life who have connections to themselves, each other and to the mother of nature are invited to join the thread.
Sister Latina Caravana has been established by Lily and her two girls to promote a network for Latin American women visiting, or living in and around the North of the UK to share their wisdom, intuition and their thoughts with others across boundaries.
